The University of Arizona women’s basketball team fell short to the University of Colorado Boulder, 56-47, on Wednesday night, Feb. 5, in CU Events Center.
The Wildcats (14-10, 5-6 in Big 12) struggled against the Buffs, scoring just 0.671 points per possession and only converting on only 30% of their possessions. The Wildcats also struggled in the paint, scoring only 24 total points, while the Buffalos scored 34.
Skylar Jones and Isis Beh led Arizona in scoring, recording 12 points apiece. Jones went 2-for-2 in free throws, alongside three rebounds and three steals in her fourth consecutive game where she has put up double-figures.
Beh also secured four rebounds and three assists in her second consecutive double-figure scoring game. Defensively, freshman Mailien Rolf led the Wildcats with seven rebounds and five steals, aiding Arizona on the aggressive end.
The Buffaloes (16-6, 7-4 in Big 12) capitalized on second-chance points, scoring just 10 points while Arizona failed to score any. Adding to their difficulties, the Wildcats struggled on the boards, losing the rebounding battle 27-43, which severely limited their second-chance opportunities, as evidenced by their only mere offensive rebounds
The Wildcats trailed by just 1 point at the end of the first quarter, with the score at 14-13. However, the Buffaloes were quick to pull ahead in the second period, extending their lead to 8-point at the half, 29-21.
Arizona had a rough offensive night, but Colorado wasn’t much better from beyond the arc. The Wildcats outscored the Buffalos from the 3-point line, shooting 27.3% compared to Colorado’s at 20%.
Despite a rough shooting night, Arizona saw improvements on the defensive end, forcing 21 Colorado turnovers compared to their own 16, but struggled to capitalize on extra possessions. The Wildcats also collected 15 steals, more than double of Colorado’s seven, demonstrating the effectiveness of Arizona’s defensive pressure.
Leading the pack for the Buffaloes was junior Jade Masogayo, who scored 19 total points, grabbed 14 rebounds and three blocks. The Buffs also dominated from the free-throw line going 11-for-14, while the Wildcats only converted on 5-of-8 of their attempts.
Looking ahead
Arizona aims to rebound and get back in the win column at home as the Wildcats host rival ASU on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. in McKale Center.
