The “Drunken Cowboy” storyline of Who’s Happy? is arguably the most famous of Happ Hadley’s comic strips — it’s certainly the most discussed amongst scholars. Historians agree that the singing cowboy character is based on Canland native and Hollywood actor Buzz Skeeter. In 1969, Skeeter received a DUI after crashing his car in the center of town. Shortly after, Skeeter disappeared from the limelight only to emerge once more, reinvented, with the groundbreaking album Coyote in a Box. But did Happ and Buzz know each other? Could this comic be proof of their friendship?
