Arizona lost its 10th consecutive game to an FBS opponent on Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats fell to Oregon State 37-27 in Corvallis, Ore. Here’s a statistical look at Arizona’s loss and current losing streak:
0: Arizona continued its early game struggles, scoring zero first-quarter points for the second straight game. The Wildcats have posted a first-quarter goose egg in four of the last five games and have been outscored 55-3 during that stretch.
27: After going scoreless in the first quarter Oregon State went off for 27 points in the second quarter on two touchdown passes from freshman quarterback Sean Mannion, one rushing touchdown from running back and Tucson product Jovan Stevenson, and a blocked punt recovered for a score. So far this season the Wildcats have been outscored 136 to 51 in the first half, yielding an average deficit of 14.2 points per game.
4: Arizona entered Saturday’s game with only three turnovers on the season. But it were turnovers that killed the Wildcats against the Beavers as they committed four — two interceptions and two fumbles lost. At the end of the second quarter quarterback Nick Foles had a pass tipped and intercepted. Foles, who still threw for 354 yards and a touchdown, also under-threw receiver David Douglas early in the second quarter and was picked off. Arizona tight end Jack Baucus fumbled a Beavers squib kick at the end of the first half and running back Daniel Jenkins also fumbled a handoff on UA’s first drive of the second half. All turnovers but one led to Oregon State scores.
300: It’s been 300 minutes of game-time since Arizona last held a lead. Since the Wildcats defeated NAU 41-10 in week one, they’ve been playing from behind in every single game. They fell behind 14-0 to the Beavers on Saturday after trailing 21-0 to Oklahoma State, 10-0 to Stanford, 14-0 to Oregon and 17-0 to USC.
53: One week after rushing for 129 yards against USC, the WIldcats ran for only 53 yards on 19 carries. They were playing from behind for most of the game so they never truly had a chance to establish their ground attack, but 2.8 yards per carry and no run longer than 15 yards is uninspiring nonetheless. Ka’Deem Carey, eight carries for eight yards, and Keola Antolin, six carries for 28 yards, did each score a rushing touchdown, however.
12: Senior kicker Alex Zendejas missed his 12th career extra point after Foles found Dan Buckner for a 28-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Zendejas has now missed four extra points this season, and also missed a 38-yard field goal on Arizona’s first drive of the game. Zendejas got benched as kickoff specialist John Bonano kicked and made his frist career extra point after Carey scored a touchdown to open the fourth quarter.
5: Behind Stevenson’s 99 rushing yards on 17 carries, the Wildcats allowed 131 rushing yards to the Beavers on Saturday. Arizona’s now allowed its last five opponents to rush for over 100 yards. The front seven did a much better job stopping the run than it had in previous contests, but Stevenson set a career-high and rushed for more yards than he had all season.
4: For the fourth straight game Arizona failed to record a sack. Mannion had all day to throw and he took advantage as he went for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Shaquille Richardson did intercept Mannion twice, one for a touchdown, but the lack of pressure continues to be one of Arizona’s biggest downfalls.
2: After going 210 straight passes without an interception, Foles threw two against the Beavers. Only one was Foles’ fault, as the first pass was tipped, but the senior has now thrown four interceptions in his last two games. Foles has, however, thrown for over 350 yards in his last three games.
343: It’s been 343 days since Arizona has defeated an FBS school. The Wildcats are 0-10 during that stretch, with their last victory came at UCLA on Oct. 30, 2010. Coincidentally, Arizona will have its chance to snap its streak against the Bruins at Arizona Stadium following the Wildcats’ bye next week.
