Christian Lander’s book “”Stuff White People Like: The Definitive Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions”” uses spot-on gentle humor to woo its readers. Based on his blog of the same name, “”Stuff White People Like”” is a social commentary, wrapped up in Lander’s own brand of poised humor.
Lander’s book and blog alike outline the favorite things of the upper-middle-class, well-educated white hipster majority. A handy log of the quirky oddities of these folk, the book just goes to show why comedians like Richard Pryor have so much material on the white majority. Take number 75, for example, titled “”Threatening to Move to Canada.”” In less than a page, Lander points out that if white people do not like the president, Congress or something like the illegal status of marijuana, going to Canada is their first threat. If something seems unreasonable it must be time to emigrate.
Now this piece is to be taken with a grain of salt. This is humor. Sure, it is to some extent social commentary, but Lander, a Ph.D. drop-out, did not write this book or his blog with anything other than the intention of getting a laugh for its shock value. However, his humor does shed light on some interesting topics of racism in the United States, which is another debate to be had. Everyone needs a little all-in-good-fun-satirical reading every once in a while. That’s where Lander’s piece comes in.
Lander’s book is an amusing foray into the world of the urban hipster. If you can take a joke, looking to Lander’s self-proclaimed “”scientific approach to highlight and explain stuff white people like”” is greatly recommended.
