Free condoms
This week, UA Campus Health Service will be hosting SexTalk week, originally called National Condom Week. This means that Campus Health will host 10 different events throughout the week informing people about safe sex practices, risk reduction, birth control options and the importance of getting tested, according to coordinator Carrie Hardesty.
Events like these are probably the reason that we are ranked number seven on Trojan Condoms Sexual Health Report Card rankings for the 2012 school year.
At the UA, the most common sexually transmitted diseases are gonorrhea, chlamydia and HPV according to SexTalk.
Although reports say that 74 percent of UA students said that they had either one or no sexual partners during the past school year, and 55 percent of first-year students said that they had not had sex in the past year, informative events regarding safe sex are a great way to combat sexually transmitted diseases.
For helping to keep us as clean as possible down there, Campus Health gets a pass for its SexTalk week.
Stressin’ out
The American Psychological Association found that Millennials are the most stressed out generation. Both Millennials (ages 18-33) and Generation Xer’s (34-47) reported a stress level of 5.4 on a 10 point scale, which was higher than the established healthy levels of stress of 4.0 for Millennials and 3.8 for Gen Xers.
According to the study, 76 percent of Millennials reported that work was somewhat or a significant stressor, which doesn’t bode well for UA students graduating this year.
The fact that our generation is the most stressed shouldn’t really come as a surprise, as we’re at the point in our lives when we make many key decisions. The stresses of trying to establish a future while being burdened with thousands of dollars in student loan debt simply aren’t a recipe for a low-stress lifestyle. To top it off, Millenials are worse at managing their stress compared to other generations, according to the study.
Let’s give the stress that’s keeping us up at night a fail.
Tunnel of Oppression
ASUA’s diversity center will host the Tunnel of Oppression starting today. The Tunnel of Oppression allows students to walk through a tunnel where presenters give speeches and recount real-life experiences about obesity, sexuality, racism and other difficulties they’ve faced. In light of race-themed parties at Duke University and Penn State, people understanding and learning what oppression feels like is important for all students. Anything that makes students more aware of how others feel and how all actions have consequences deserves a pass.
