The university area boasts a wide array of pizza parlors. We’re not talking Domino’s and Pizza Hut – there are some legit places to grab a slice, no matter what your preference. From New York-style thin crust to Chicago-style deep dish, and everywhere in between, Tucson leaves no slice unturned.
Best Deep Dish
University Boulevard boasts Frog & Firkin, a family-friendly English-style pub. Frog’s pizza is intense. Think thick, delicious crust with great sauce and all the cheeses and toppings you’d ever need. There are three sizes – small, medium and large – and pizza by the slice. As with most deep-dish pizzas, these aren’t quick to make, so stop by here if you’ve got a solid hour for lunch.
Zachary’s also serves up a great deep-dish, and is family friendly with a nice patio where you can enjoy your pizza. Zachary’s offers a simple menu with fantastic pizza straight from the heart of Chicago. If you like Gino’s East in the Windy City, you’ll surely enjoy a slice at Zachary’s. The crust is great, with just a touch of olive oil. With every topping from meats of all sorts to veggies and a great array of cheeses, you won’t leave this place hungry. The large pizza can serve at least six people, if not more.
Best New York Style and Best Crust
This title can go to none other than Brooklyn Pizza. Located a jump, a hop and a skip from campus on Fourth Avenue, Brooklyn is the best for thin crust. Every New Yorker I’ve come across, including my dad, approves of this New York-style thin crust. In this tiny, art-filled restaurant you can watch the cooks throw dough to make your pie. They offer all the toppings a pizza could need and it is extremely affordable. This is by no means health food, but the salty, cheesy, delicious pizza is good to the last bite. And the crust is to die for – I can never refuse a slice at Brooklyn.
Best Variety
Magpies offers a plethora of creative pizzas. There are “”lite”” pizzas for the calorie-conscious, and white pizzas with olive oil and garlic sauce, as well as pesto, rather than the traditional tomato. Their specialty pizzas offer a great selection of interesting new toppings such as squash, and they even offer soy alternative cheese. There’s a solid menu of vegetarian items and 10 meats for your pizza. Magpies boasts nearly 30 different toppings for your pizza.
Honorable mention
No Anchovies on University also offers a nicely put-together thin crust pizza. Slices are a good size and they have a great selection of toppings, but if you want anchovies you’ll have to go someplace else. It’s a great place for a quick bite to eat before your next Family Weekend event.
