Marvel Television released the first two episodes of its new TV series “Agatha All Along” Sept. 18. Arriving just in time for Halloween season, the series centers around witches and has heavy spooky vibes.
The series is a direct follow-up to Marvel’s “WandaVision” and comes from its same showrunner Jac Schaeffer. The vibe of “Agatha All Along” is very different from “WandaVision” thus far. Two episodes in, “Agatha All Along” is funny, spooky and mysterious, yet you might not know that from only the first episode, which was slow and took a while to draw me in. Moreover, it doesn’t have much of the Agatha Harkness, played by Kathryn Hahn, that was so fun to watch in “WandaVision.” Instead, Hahn plays a different version of the character, and it’s incredibly jarring as a “WandaVision” fan. If the first episode were the only one released in this batch, I would’ve been very unimpressed.
That being said, the second episode is more true to Agatha’s character (Hahn). The episode is fun, chaotic and just a little evil. It also introduces an amazing supporting cast including Sasheer Zamata of “Saturday Night Live” and Broadway legend Patti LuPone as witches in Agatha’s new coven. The jokes are funny, there’s some nice scary bits and the new character Teen shines as Agatha’s sidekick. Teen, played by Joe Locke, also provides something rare for the Marvel Cinematic Universe: explicit queer representation. This has really only happened a couple of times in the MCU, so it’s nice for it to happen so early on in the new series. Teen (Locke) radiates joy and energy as he’s super excited to meet his hero Agatha Harkness, and I love getting to see a queer character experience happiness on screen instead of despair. Hopefully he continues to be such a joyous presence in the show.
The second episode also includes a musical number, something else associated with Agatha after her song from “WandaVision,” which the new series is named after. This new song has been in my head since watching the episode.
“Agatha All Along” is a perfect Halloween series, if the second episode is anything to go by. If the first episode isn’t your thing, keep going with the second. The second episode is a really great viewing experience with wonderful queer representation, lots of supernatural themed sets and decor and wonderful performances from all those involved. It should absolutely be on your watch list this spooky season.
