Editor’s note: Looking for something to do tonight? Here’s this week’s pick in a semester-long series where the Wildcat gives you the inside scoop on what you can’t miss each weekend at home in the world of Arizona Athletics.
The World Cup may be over, but this summer’s soccer season may have just added a little bit more interest to the sport.
And if you were one of those newfound fans of the game, you just may want to check out the Arizona women’s soccer squad as it takes on Gonzaga at 7:30 tonight in the season opener at Murphy Stadium.
The Wildcats, who host this weekend’s Four Points Sheraton Cats Classic, look to rebound from their 2-1 loss at then-No. 24 Utah on Sunday.
Don’t think the Wildcats are the same team that made it to the third round of the NCAA College Cup last year? Think again.
You might not know it yet, but another McCall Smith is blooming right before your eyes.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea McIntyre has stepped in for the injured junior and is doing a fine job.
Thus far McIntyre has only allowed four goals on the season, the same amount Smith allowed in the first four games last year.
And don’t forget returning starters London King and Gianna DeSaverio.
The two forwards have both scored two points apiece on the season and are looking to further their success against Gonzaga, ranked No. 9 in the West Region.
But don’t expect the Cats to overlook the Zags, who are 3-0-1 on the season and employ an almost impenetrable defense. Gonzaga freshman goalkeeper Jessie Thalman has only allowed for one goal thus far this season.
On the offensive side, the Zags have three players who have scored three points each.
But with the leadership of 2004 National Coach of the Year Dan Tobias and maybe a little help from the fans, the Wildcats just may pull off a victory.
