Arizona volleyball wasn’t able to get the job done Wednesday night as they were defeated in a quick three sets against No. 13 UCLA, 3-0.
UCLA was quick to take the lead and won the set, 25-15. The Bruins went on a 5-0 run to start the set and didn’t look back to the Wildcats. The Bruins lead was never cut to less than five points. The Arizona defense was unable to block the Bruins from scoring and faced seven errors in the set.
Arizona kept it close for a majority of the second set, holding ties through the beginning, but the Bruins pulled away at the end taking the set, 25-17. Four of the last five UCLA points came on service aces from senior outside hitter Reily Buechler, daughter of former Wildcat Jud Buechler.
The Wildcats were unable to bounce back from the Bruins 2-0 lead as they were swept in the third set giving the match to UCLA, 25-20. Arizona freshman outside hitterKatie Smoot had five kills for the Wildcats.
“I told them it’s not about winning this particular match, it’s about advancing our game”, Arizona head coach Dave Rubio said. “It’s about advancing our game, becoming more skilled and mentally becoming better, and that to me is the most important thing.”
It was an upsetting night for the Wildcats offense as they posted no more than 10 kills. Freshman outside hitter Paige Whipple finished with 9 kills along with 10 digs. Sophomore setter Julia Patterson had 28 assists, tied for her second lowest on the season.
Arizona takes the court in the McKale Center again on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m., as they host No. 15 USC.
