With just 10 games remaining in the season, the Arizona club hockey team will attempt to finish the last stretch of the campaign on a winning note.
The possibility of making the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s National Championship Tournament appears to be out of reach, even with a bulk of games remaining.
“”I wouldn’t think we were going to make nationals with our record,”” said head coach Leo Golembiewski. “”It’s been a tough year, but that doesn’t make the games any less important.””
The Icecats will face-off against Adrian College Saturday at the Tucson Convention Center at 7:30 p.m.
Arizona will be without their second leading scorer, sophomore Jordan Schupan, out due to a dislocated shoulder he suffered in the first period of 6-5 shootout loss to Michigan State last Saturday. Icecat coaches expect Schupan to miss two to three weeks.
“”We have to do the best we can considering the key losses we had this year,”” Golembiewski said of not having four of the team’s key players. “”We have to get the most out of the younger (players).””
The Icecats will be without junior forward Cody Morin and freshman defenseman Nick Bach due to academic ineligibility. Senior forward Matt Conover will also miss six weeks with a sprained left knee, a nagging injury for the entire season. Golembiewski said that the team is hoping he comes back for the season finale against Arizona State to cap his college career.
After this weekend the Icecats will play six straight games on the road, all against teams that they have already played this season.
Instead of the Icecats playing its usual games on Friday, the team will play that game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Tucson Convention Center.
“”It would be huge if the guys that don’t play as much can step it up,”” said senior captain Robbie Nowinski after their loss on Saturday to Michigan State.
