The Arizona volleyball team didn’t hold back on getting a win under their belt for the Pac-12 conference as they swept rival Arizona State in three sets Thursday night in (26-24, 25-18, 25-22).
Arizona State head coach Sanja Tomasevic coached her first conference game tonight but was unable to get the win against Arizona head coach Dave Rubio.
Set one was close as the teams battled back-and-forth throughout the entire set, tied at 24. Arizona middle blocker Jade Turner and outside hitter Elizabeth Shelton’s blocking helped the ‘Cats get the win in the end 26-24. Turner and Shelton were leading the team in kills and blocks in set one.
It was a hitting battle that Arizona ended up winning in the second set. The Wildcats took off running early in the set leaving the Sun Devils to trail behind taking the set 25-18. Outside hitter Kendra Dahlke found herself in the starting line-up leading the ‘Cats and ended the match with 12 kills.
Arizona led 2-0 and showed that they came to play. The Wildcats didn’t look back at ASU as they marked their territory at Wells Fargo Arena and swept the Sun Devils, 25-22.
Turner came out ready to play for the conference-opening match ending with 11 kills, 6 blocks hitting at .381%, while outside hitter Tyler Spriggs finished the match with 8 kills and 3 digs. UA had finished the match with seven serving aces.
The Wildcats now hold a record on 7-3, 1-0 in Pac-12 conference and will be back at McKale Center on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. against Washington State.
