The Cherry Avenue Parking Garage near McKale Stadium is now open. University of Arizona Police Department officers cleared the area after reports of an alleged gunman.
Around 2:27 p.m., UAPD officers received a phone call reporting a man with a rifle on the first level of the Cherry Avenue Parking Garage, according to Joe Bermudez, crime prevention officer for UAPD.
Officers secured the area and conducted a search of the garage, but were unable to locate the subject.
As a precaution, officers also searched McKale Stadium and surrounding areas, Bermudez said.
A UAlert message was sent out to the UA community to avoid the area near the garage, and described the alleged gunman as a Hispanic male wearing dark clothing and carrying a rifle.
Once the search was complete, a second UAlert message was sent out advising that the area was all clear.
Bermudez said if officers are able to get a composite sketch of the alleged gunman, UAPD will release that information, though they only have a description for now.
“We were able to immediately respond to the area,” Bermudez said. “We were unable to locate him and confident that he has left the area.”
UAPD is encouraging the UA community to report any suspicious activity, as well as reminding people to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings.
“We want people to call if they see anything out of the ordinary or suspicious,” Bermudez said, “so that we can go and check it out.”
