The University of Arizona volleyball team (12-4, 1-4 in Big 12) lost to No. 13 ASU, falling in four sets 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 31-29, 25-15) on Wednesday, Oct. 9 in Desert Financial Arena. The Wildcats have won one of their last five games as they continue their first season in the Big 12.
Jaelyn Hodge led the Wildcats with a double-double, putting up 20 kills and 13 digs. Hodge reached 1,400 kills, making her the eighth player in team program history to do so. Jordan Wilson followed second, scoring 14 kills while marking seven digs of her own. Defensively, Arizona was led by Kiari Robey who tallied five blocks and Haven Wray who marked 15 digs.
Game recap
The Sun Devils began the first set going on a 5-0 scoring run to build a 7-4 lead over the Wildcats. Despite the Wildcats recovering the lead and scoring 13 kills in the set, ASU continued to take over to win the first set 25-20. ASU outside hitter Geli Cyr had 6 kills in the set to help the Sun Devils win.
The Wildcats won the second set 25-23, with Arizona’s defense holding ASU to its lowest hitting percentage of the match, .111. Carlie Cisneros opened the set with 2 back-to-back aces while Hodge led the Wildcats with 5 kills of her own. In a tight set with multiple lead changes, Arizona also tallied four blocks to win the set.
ASU claimed the third set 31-29 after extra play, as the Wildcats opened on a 6-0 scoring run to lead 7-2 but failed to hold it throughout the set. Hodge led the set, marking 8 kills while Wilson tallied 5 kills.
The Wildcats lost the fourth and final set 25-15 as they tallied 10 kills compared to ASU’s 16. Hodge led the set with 4 kills while Wilson marked 3 kills of their own. The Sun Devils held the Wildcats to a .150 hitting percentage in the fourth set, Arizona’s lowest in the match.
Looking ahead
The Wildcats will head back home as they take on the University of Colorado, Boulder on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. in McKale Center.
